Technical and safety milestones.

The introduction of the Mercedes 124 model series in December 1984 marked a turning point in the mid-size vehicle class, as it succeeded the successful 123 model series. With an advanced technical concept based on lightweight construction using high-strength sheet steel and other weight-reducing materials, as well as aerodynamic optimization, the 124 model series achieved a significant reduction in fuel consumption. Safety standards were further optimized through innovative deformation zones and high side impact and rollover resistance of the passenger compartment, which also enabled the vehicles to withstand high frontal impact requirements.

In addition to its technical brilliance, the 124 model series was characterized by an independent design that combined aerodynamic efficiency with functional aesthetics. Characteristic design elements such as the trapezoidal rear and the angled tail lights not only improved aerodynamics, but also made it easier to load the trunk. The lift-controlled panoramic windscreen wiper and electrically heated windscreen washer nozzles underlined the demand for comfort and visibility in all weather conditions.

These engines, combined with advanced axle designs, gave the vehicles excellent handling characteristics and a dynamic driving experience. The introduction of the 4MATIC models in 1987, which were almost DM 12,000 more expensive than their rear-wheel drive counterparts, underlined Mercedes-Benz's technological leadership.

The 124 model series set standards in terms of variety and technological innovation. In addition to saloons and T-models, chassis were also available for customization. The introduction of a regulated exhaust gas purification system with a three-way catalytic converter in 1985 and the continuous expansion of the model range, including coupés and turbo variants, testified to the adaptability and innovative spirit of the model series. The continuous improvement of engine technology and the expansion of standard equipment, including ABS and heated exterior mirrors, ensured that the 124 model series remained the leader in its class in the years that followed.
